I'll take a screaming fox any day

What a terrible night sleep I had last night. The foxes woke me up repeatedly. Big drama unfolded in the adjacent field somewhere around 2 am, and then carried over into my front yard for the remainder of the night--I could hear them trotting back and forth across the gravel. They tripped the motion detector lights several times, and were vocalizing like mad. These calls, which they make when they are having a territorial dispute, are quite alarming--blood curdling screams that almost sound human. I read an article that said that this time of year kits start to leave their mothers to stake out their own territory, so maybe that's what all the ruckus was about. It's funny...a few short months ago in Brooklyn it was loud, thuggy drug dealers who disturbed our sleep from the street below. I'll take a screaming fox any day.
